Today patients have several choices when it comes to the materials that are used to restore teeth. If you are you unhappy with imperfections in your teeth, or the way they are positioned within your mouth, then you can use composite bonding to achieve a beautiful smile
What is Composite Bonding
Composite dental bonding is the process of using a resin material that matches the natural color of your teeth to restore your smile. Composite resin is a mixture of plastic and powdered glass that mimics the natural appearance of the tooth. Dentists call the process “bonding,” because composite resin has a unique chemical composition allowing it to adhere to teeth.
The resin is applied to your tooth and dried into place using an ultraviolet light that “bonds” the cosmetic material with your natural enamel. Dental bonding can be used to improve teeth that are stained, cracked, chipped, misshapen or disconnected by unattractive minor gaps. For the most part, bonding is quick and easy. Depending on the number of teeth that are being treated, the dentist can usually complete the composite bonding procedure within one or two hours. If you have several teeth that need treatment, it may take longer, or the dentist may decide to divide up the treatment between two appointments.
Unlike crowns and veneers, which require some enamel to be removed, dental bonding doesn’t require any significant tooth preparation. If the area doesn’t have any decay inside, the dentist can cover it without eliminating any tooth material aside from minor etching. Tooth-colored resin is also used to fill teeth damaged by cavities. Like dental bonding, tooth-colored fillings require very little removal of the tooth’s healthy surface.
